Audi A2 Concept EV Officially Revealed Ahead Of 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show Debut: First Images

by Zack Colt

The four-ring manufacturer decided to use the upcoming Frankfurt motor show to launch an all-new A2 concept, seemingly a direct successor to the A2 of the early 2000s. About a week ago Audi has released the first sketches of this concept, but now we have th chance to see the first handful of (CG-enhanced) pics of the A2 Concept, and it’s quite cool.

Despite the fact that the A2 is Audi’s answer to the BMW i3, this model is rumored to arrive two years after BMW’s premium EV in 2013.

The original model was a small MPV built from 1999 to 2005 that was way ahead of its time in several ways, but what made it truly unique was that it was manufactured entirely out of aluminum.

The new A2 concept is, however, a different car – and a very confused one at that. First of all, it’s a five-door hatchback but it’s actually smaller in size than the three-door A1 measuring just 3.80 meters (12.47 ft) long, 1.69 meters (5.54 ft) wide and 1.49 meters (4.89 ft) tall. In comparison, the A2 is 3.95 meters long, 1.74 meters wide and 1.42 meters tall.

This concept is powered by an 85kW/270Nm electric motor (believed to be the same unit as the one that featured in the Volkswagen Bulli Concept), sending power to the front wheel via a single-speed transmission. With the top speed limited to 150km/h, A2’s acceleration from 0-100km/h comes up in less than 10 seconds.

With an estimated driving range of 200km, and a full recharge takes around four hours, the lithium-ion battery seems the right choise for this model.

At the inside, the Audi A2 concept has a flat interior floorboard, with a center console attached to the driver’s seat; the rear console extends forward between the two rear seats. In addition comes the four individual seats, the colors and materials which add lightness and functionality.

The Audi A2 Concept will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show on September 13, so stay tuned for new details.
