Peugeot has unveiled its all-new 208 R5 at the 2012 Paris Motor Show today. It is a true ‘competition monster’, and will for no doubt overtake the 207 Super 2000, highlight of the S2000 category for its technical performance as well as for its sporting and commercial performance. The new 208 R5 is expected to be running competitively in the second half of 2014.

Quite a noticeable reduction on costs can be seen in the R5. The major technical specifications seen are: 4-wheel drive, 5-speed sequential gearbox mated to a turbocharged 1600cc motor developing 280bhp, no central differential and long travel suspension.
On the exterior, the changes seen are : widened tracks, a spoiler, the increase in the wheel arches to fit 18″ wheels without forgetting the minimum weight set at 1200kg for the gravel (loose-surface) and asphalt (tarmac) version.

The Peugeot 208 R5 sees a great improvement with its new add-ons, particularly in regards to the weight. The shell of the 208 has benefited from a weight reduction of approximately 40 kilos compared to the 207. Its dimensions are an advantage for the R5 with its long wheelbase which provides excellent chassis stability. Also, being more compact, the 208 will be more efficient. All of these noteworthy qualities of the 208 combine to give the R5 excellent road holding.

Bertrand Vallat said: “Based on an optimisation of costs, the regulations impose, among other things, a maximum price for certain parts and technical limitations such as a minimum weight of components of the chassis and engine.”

He added that the performance of the 208 R5 is expected to outstrip that of its predecessor.
The new R5 category will launch next year, with the FIA placing a price of €180,000 (£145,000) for all R5 cars.

The Peugeot 208 R5 is believed to have big ambitions. It will be designed and assembled in the workshops of Peugeot Sport in Velizy, and it is also said that, Peugeot will begin a test programme from the end of 2012, both on asphalt and on loose surface (gravel), and the 208 R5 will compete at the highest level in key championships which include Intercontinental Rally Challenge, European Rally Championship, National Championships.

Stay tuned for more updates which will be posted very soon, till then take a look at the Pictures and let us know your viewpoints.
