Report: Volkswagen XR1 with Golf GTI engine planned

by David Bond

As per some of the recent reports, Volkswagen is supposedly working on a GTI-powered version of the XL1.

The company is planning a new model called XR1 which may replace the two-cylinder TDI & electric motor combo of the XL1 with the four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine of the Golf VII GTI. If this happens, we can expect a sprint of 0-62 mph (0-100 kmph) in less than 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph (305 kmph).

Inspte of having some great features and a solid performance, the Volkswagen XR1 will still be an efficient car capable of returning more than 70 mpg UK (58.2 mpg US or 4 liters / 100 km). It will take significant re-engineering as the size of the chassis will have to be increased and widened to make room for the mid-mounted engine and dual-clutch gearbox.

Because of the above mentioned changes, the weight of the car is expected to increase but will be offset by the removal of the electric motor and battery pack which will shave off more than 100 kg (220 lbs).

Talkin about the price, the same report indicates the XR1 will cost around 40,000 GBP (approx 46,000 EUR / 59,800 USD) if green-lighted for production.
