BMW is thinking about constructing a new plug-in hybrid car battery factory in Thailand, the nation’s industry minister stated on Friday.

Construction was most likely to begin in the middle of next year with a financial investment of 2 billion baht ($57 million), Industry Minister Atchaka Sibunruang stated, including that the factory would make hybrid automobiles more affordable for Thai customers.

“Hybrid vehicles are still costly now however once there is a factory established and batteries are available this will make it affordable for customers,” Atchaka informed reporters.

A representative for BMW in Thailand stated the automaker was not immediately able to comment on the financial investment but would release a statement on Monday.

Atchaka said the Thai government was dealing with BMW to offer tax incentives in order to make the nation a center for plug-in hybrid automobiles.
