German high-end automaker BMW Group will raise its yearly production capacity to 3 million cars by 2020 and plans to construct its X5 offroader in China, German daily Handelsblatt stated, mentioning business sources knowledgeable about the strategies.

BMW Group, that includes the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, and constructed 2.37 million automobiles in 2016, plans to increase its production capacity two times in China to 600,000 vehicles, Handelsblatt stated.

In North America and Mexico, production will be boosted to 750,000 vehicles from 410,000, the paper stated, including that BMW brand wants to surpass competing Mercedes-Benz, which is owned by Daimler, to recover the volume sales crown for premium automakers.

BMW refused to discuss the Handelsblatt report.
