GMC Granite Concept might become a reality

by Sebastian Bivin

After catching all the eyes at the Detroit Auto Show, the “Professional Grade” division at GM decided to put GMC Granite into production.

A big obstacle in achieving this goal is coming up with a solution on how to build the doors as Lisa Hutchinson, product marketing director at GMC declared. The current door design must be respected in order to ease access to the rear seat she added.
This is not piece of cake though because this is a small car and they can’t add a fixed B-pillar, so it will be very hard to meet the safety requirements for side impacts.

GMC have the option to go for a hidden pillar like 2011 Opel Meriva has, but this will ruin the design. It is an easier thing to do though because GMC has actually proven that it can build rear-hinged doors.
