This Mercedes-Benz 300SL in Cuba Is Alone and Ill-Fated

by SpeedLux

Essentially, the 300SL from the luxury German automaker, Mercedes-Benz, is a historical classic car. It has a long history behind it. With that being said, the car actually still deserves a place on today’s modern roads, just like American cars dated from the 1960s. However, it seems that this one Mercedes car in Cuba does not have such luck. As a matter of fact, the car won’t likely be able to once again taste the tarmac, either in 2014 or the years ahead.

As reported by the Classic Driver, a photographer by the name Piotr Degler has come across an abandoned Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in Cuba. That is very unfortunate because the car is actually a very rare model. It turned out that Degler first came to notice about such a fact from whispers in the streets. He was then determined to find out where the car really was. So, in his quest to find the abandoned vehicle in question, Degler wandered around the island for no less than one whole month. He had a hard time trying to locate the car because, strangely enough, none of the local people seemed to know anything about the whereabouts of the car. Nonetheless, this did not stop Degler from looking for it. In the end, he actually managed to come across the rare Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, despite in a very tragic condition, only carcass of the car was still there. Heck, it was even covered by a banana tree.

However, Degler unveils to the Classic Driver that during his journey, he actually came across dozens of hidden treasures unknown to the locals. One of them was a Hispano-Suiza. Yet, it was the Mercedes that eluded him even until several days prior to his scheduled departure.

According to Degler, he took the entire day shooting pictures of the abandoned car. Yet, later on, he realized that shooting images of the car at night might prove to be more appropriate so he shot the car again when nighttime fell. Degler describes his experience of actually finding the car as an experience that words could never describe.
