The New 2011 Ferrari 599GTO

by Zack Colt

When word gets out about a new Ferrari secretive it’s hard not to get excited, and even more so when that Ferrari involves three of the most storied letters in Scuderia lore—G, T, and O. And when the rumbles prove true, and Ferrari introduces something as ferocious as this car, the 599GTO, it’s hard not to get the urge to consider start knocking over banks and selling your relatives for the chance to own one. Read the details to get a better meaning of just how exciting this new roadster is. The 599GTO is powered by a 671-hp, 6.0-liter V-12 and maximum horsepower is 8250 rpm, while the peak torque figure of 457 lb-ft comes online at 6500 rpm. Ferrari’s six-speed F1 automated manual gearbox is the only transmission; it is said to deliver the same 60-millisecond shift times as the 599GTO’s. Zero to 62 mph is achieved in just 3.4 seconds. Ferrari calls the 599 GTO its “fastest-ever road car,”

The car will be based with an all-aluminum space frame and weighs almost 200 pounds less than the two-ton 599 GTB. That is possible because of using thinner gauge aluminum for the body, and even more weight was reduced in the exhaust and braking system. The interior also eludes a lighter touch, with more carbon fiber than normal. Ferrari has improved the GTO’s slipperiness by improving the car’s aerodynamics with a new lower splitter for the front spoiler, and the F1-inspired discs between the wheels and brake rotors that funnel hot air from the wheelhouses along the side of the car for reduced drag. The wheels measure 20 inches in diameter front and rear; the fronts are 9.5 inches wide and are wrapped in 285/30-series tires, while the 11.5-inch-wide rears wear 315/35 rubber.
