Drivers who register an electric car in Nebraska could be paying costlier fees under a bill presented to a legislative committee.

Supporters say the bill was necessary to compensate the state for gas tax revenue it loses due to alternative-fuel vehicles.

Nebraska Legislature Bruce Bostelman, of Brainard, states he introduced it as everyone who uses roads should indeed pay for their maintenance.

The bill would gradually boost the registration fee from the present $75 to $125 by 2024.
