Mercedes S 350 BlueTEC with ECO Start/Stop System enhances fuel efficiency by 9 percent

by Alex

Mercedes-Benz has stated the S350 BlueTEC model would be available with the ECO start/stop function as a standard fit from now on. This would better the fuel consumption factor of the car by reducing the fuel consumption by 9 percent. The new rating would then be 6.2 liter per 100 km or 37.93 mpg US. The present fuel consumption rating of the car of this size is 6.8 liter per 100 km or 43.59 mpg US.

The other performance statistics of the 3.0 liter V6 engine are 258 hp and 620 Nm or 457.3 lb ft of torque. The engine is Euro 6 compliant as far as emission standards go. It has been able to achieve this with the incorporation of the BlueTEC technology with AdBlue exhaust treatment. With the start / stop function efficiency of the S-Class improves further as CO2 emission drops from 177 to 164 grams per kilometer.

What happens exactly with the ECO start / stop system is that the engines switches off when the driver applies brakes to stop the car and starts up automatically when the driver lifts his foot off the brake pedals. The car has an intelligent control system incorporated which ensures that the functions that ensure comfort of the passengers in the car continue to run even when the engine has been switched off.

The car also incorporates the TWAS (twin-wire-arc-sprayed) coating on the engine which helps in further improvement of the fuel efficiency of the V6 diesel engine. This technology had been pioneered by AMG for their 6.3 liter V8 petrol engine and are now being used on the diesel engine of the S 350 Blue Tec as well. The interesting part is that, this technology helps in reducing fuel consumption by 3 percent, as well as reduces the weight of the engine by 4.3 kilograms.

No change in price of the S 350 BlueTEC has been effected due to the inclusion of these changes and will continue to be sold at €76,517 or $110,445 as per current exchange rates, which includes 19 percent VAT in Germany.
