Volkswagen stated on Thursday that a historian commissioned by the automaker discovered that a few of the security staff at Volkswagen do Brasil had cooperated with the nation’s former military regime.

“There is no clear evidence discovered, that the cooperation was institutionalized by the company,” stated Christopher Kopper, a history professor at Germany’s Bielefeld University who performed the study on Volkswagen’s role in Brazil from 1964 to 1985.

Kopper based his study on statements made by previous workers, documents from Volkswagen’s business archives in Germany and Brazil along with Brazilian state archives, Volkswagen stated.

The Brazilian military regime ruled Brazil from April 1, 1964 to March 15, 1985.
