For all this time, what people have been seeing on the World Wide Web are only prototypes of what may seem to be the 2016 model year 5-Series from the German automaker, BMW. Usually, these prototypes are spotted featuring body panels from the current generation model, combined with what seem to be the body panels of the next generation 5-Series. This time, however, an entirely new 5-Series prototype has been spotted while undergoing factory tests. Unfortunately, however, the test mule was spotted under heavy camouflage all over it.
Nonetheless, in spite of the camouflage, the luxury German sedan has been spotted to have a pair of redesigned A-pillars, air breathers on the front wings, door handles that look different from usual and even a set of customized doors. A solid character line can be seen stretching horizontally across the doors. Then, at the rear end of the car, a flatter rear window is clearly visible.
Rumor has it the next generation 5-Series from BMW will be based on the company’s so-called 35up platform. This makes it possible for the luxury German automaker to cut down the weight of the car by no less than 100 kg. Carbon fiber is the dominant element in constructing the car, combined with some rather advanced materials.
Under the hood, future owners of the 2016 BMW 5-Series can expect to enjoy 408 hp of power output and 750 Nm of torque, both of which come from a quad-turbo engine the car uses. That, however, is for the M550xd variant. Yet, as for the flagship variant, the M5, it is likely to have 626 hp and even an optional xDrive system. The latter will most likely arrive come 2017.
However, for those who can’t wait to lay their hands on the standard version of the 2016 BMW 5-Series, it seems that they will only have to wait until July 2016.
