Old meets New: 971 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG meets 2011 S63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz has recently announced release of its new 2011 S63 AMG. The car lovers would certainly wonder at the way automobile giant has dressed it up alike the famous 300SEL 6.8 AMG endurance racing car. The later took part in the “24 Hours of Spa”.

The 300SEL 6.8 AMG had vied at the track of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.  The “24 Hours of Spa”, in 1971 was participated by 300SEL 6.8 AMG, Ford Capri RS, BMW 2800 CS, Chevrolet Camaro, Opel Commodore, and Alfa Romeo GTA. The car needed frequent refueling and faced some mechanical problems. 300SEL 6.8 AMG was ranked second in a 308 lap race led by a Capri while leading ahead of a Camaro. This victory made the car internationally renowned and more so in Germany. 300 units were produced by Mercedes in year 2006.

Recognizing its victory in 1971, Mercedes placed matching sponsor decals all over its new 2011 S63 AMG in order to channel the spirit of old AMG-prepped 300SEL. The new twin turbo charged V8 of AMZ with improved power and fuel efficiency debuts in the Mercedes S-Class.

The two speedy sedans were driven, around Spa for a classic photo shoot, post modification of exterior appearance in presence of Hans Heyer and his trademark Tyrolean hat. The Hans Heyer was the co-driver in 1971 victory.
