GM EV Owners Get a New Path to CarPlay and Android Auto for $199

General Motors made headlines when it moved away from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its newer electric vehicles, choosing an infotainment setup built around Android Automotive instead. The decision sparked debate among buyers, especially because the underlying software platform already had the capability to support phone projection systems.

A newly introduced device called EV Play LT now aims to fill that gap. Priced at $199, the adapter brings both Android Auto and CarPlay back to most Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac electric vehicles through a one-time purchase. No recurring fees are attached to the package.

The story becomes more interesting when looking at the technical side. According to the information provided, GM’s electric vehicles were never limited by hardware. Android Automotive already possessed the requirements needed to operate Android Auto and CarPlay. Despite this, the company chose to focus on Google’s embedded ecosystem after transitioning its EV lineup to the Android Automotive platform. Owners of Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac electric models gained access to Google’s integrated services, while phone projection support disappeared from the factory setup.

That decision did not end demand for the familiar smartphone interfaces. Buyers continued searching for alternatives, and EV Play LT arrives as one response. The installation process appears straightforward. Users connect the adapter through a USB port and install an application in the vehicle. The manufacturer describes the setup as plug-and-play and estimates the process takes roughly two minutes before Android Auto and CarPlay become operational.

Unlike some aftermarket solutions, the adapter supports both wired and wireless connections. The company behind the product states that Android Auto and CarPlay function across supported GM electric vehicles once the system is configured.

A second product sits higher in the range. Called EV Play Max, the upgraded version runs Android and includes access to the Google Play Store. Additional functionality becomes available through this model, including the ability to watch Netflix and run games directly within GM EVs. The article describes the device as a way to add capabilities resembling a compact computer integrated into the vehicle environment.

Shipping is expected to begin this week. Reliability remains one unanswered question. Similar products have appeared before, and overheating or long-term durability issues occasionally surfaced. Looking at the photos referenced in the report, no obvious cooling vents are visible on the device, though real-world use will ultimately determine how well the hardware performs over time.

For now, the headline remains simple. A $199 adapter brings Android Auto and CarPlay back to many Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac electric vehicles, giving owners another option in a segment where smartphone integration continues to matter.
