Apple self-driving vehicle testing strategy gives hints to tech program

Apple Inc detailed a strategy to train operators of self-driving vehicles in documents submitted to California regulators previously this month, the newest ideas to the company’s autonomous car technology aspirations.

Apple was given a license to test self-driving cars on April 14 by the California Department of Motor Vehicles however the company has never stated anything about its strategy.

The state launched 41 pages of Apple application files to Reuters that provide some hints about the business’s extremely secret self-driving effort, which it has never openly recognized.

The iPhone maker joins a list of automakers, start-ups and technology competitors, including Alphabet’s Waymo, that are testing vehicles on state roads. Apple is trying to find new hit products and self-driving vehicle technology is anticipated to change the traditional automobile market.

Under the application, Apple included a 10-page training strategy that seemed connected to operators reclaiming manual control of the car throughout automated driving exercises of the system, which it calls an advancement platform.

Apple has not commented beyond the filing.

The strategy includes a document called “Automated System: Development Platform Specific Training Overview” whose goal is to train safety drivers in various automatic driving conditions.

“Development platform will be managed electronically (e.g. joystick) and safety drivers should be ready to step in and take control,” the document includes.

The document highlights various situations to be tested, from high speed driving and tight U-turns to lane changes.
