Are you curious to know how BMW 1M will fare against big brother M3 around the track? Well, Sport Auto, an enthusiast magazine in Germany too had the same idea and in order to arrive at a clearer picture, they pushed these cars to the limits at the Hockenheimring circuit in Germany. And according to the internet forum 1addicts, 1M has emerged faster than M3. The German Magazine had a Stock 1 Series M Coupe race against a current-generation (E92) M3 with ZCP competition package and dual clutch transmission. The 1M is available only with a six speed manual transmission. The cars were run separately on the track by Sport Auto. The 1M posted a time of 1:14.1 while the M3 finished the lap in 1:14.2.
The difference of a tenth of a second is seemingly insignificant, but it is important when you consider that the M3 is powered by a 414 hp, 4.0 liter V-8 engine and one car is heavier than the other by 378 pounds. The 1 Series M Coupe is powered by a 3.0 liter, turbocharged inline six that delivers 335 hp. Sport Auto has also tested other cars earlier. A record of 1:14.3 was posted by both an Audi TT-RS and a E92 M3 that was equipped with a manual transmission.
The Audi RS5 meanwhile had a time of 1:15.3, which is one full second behind. The Porsche Cayman S with a six speed manual posted a time of exactly 1:14. However, with a dual clutch transmission, the same car was faster with a time of 1:13.9. This shows that the 1M stands in the list of some very impressive vehicles. The awesome speed of the 1M is pointed out by the German Magazine, but it does not ignore its fun side too. The magazine is glad that the 1M has kept some of the oversteering qualities seen in several of BMW’s old models. According to BMW, it aims to remind them of the 1M’s sporting heritage since the company had a vintage E30 M3 to compare directly at the press event last year.
