McLaren Rolls Out Special Operations Bespoke Program: Official Details, Price and Pictures

by Andrew Randall

British automaker McLaren has just announced at 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance the launch of a new division called Special Operations responsible for delivering bespoke projects based on the company’s sports cars.

McLaren Special Operations is designed for the new MP4-12C, and two other supercars in the pipeline. It caters to owners looking to add unique touches to their cars, something that can be very profitable for automakers.

McLaren wanted to give us an example presenting at this years Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance a special MP4-12C model featuring a Volcano Orange body finish and a range of bespoke carbon fiber upgrades. Beside this, the MP4-12C presented in California also includes the addition of a gloss black roof, diamond cut finish wheels, carbon sill panels, steering wheel and front wheel arch louvres plus carbon fiber made engine cover vents and wiper system cover.

Paul Mackenzie, head of the new McLaren Special Operations division, said: “For nearly twenty years we have been closely managing relationships with owners of the McLaren F1, and understanding their needs is a great foundation on which to launch a service that will now include MP4-12C customers.”

As expected, such modification doesn’t come cheap. For example, the car pictured will set you back more than $270,000 once all the options are added, which is almost $50,000 on top of the price of the MP4-12C.
