While its 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 was caught again during testing at Nurburgring, the Geraman brand BMW revealed its newest hybrid in the form of the F10 Active Hybrid 5. Based on the 535i Sedan, this model promises new innovative technology, impressive performance and low fuel consumption.
The 2012 BMW Active Hybrid 5 is powered by a 3.0 liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine, teamed with an electric drive system. This engine is delivering 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque while the electric motor has 55 HP and 155 lb-ft. The electric motor is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithium-ion battery with 96 cells and usable energy capacity of 675 Wh, housed in the trunk. The power is transferred to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission allowing the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
According to the manufacturer, the 2012 F10 Active Hybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), for zero emissions in town, while the lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store sufficient energy to give an all-electric driving range of up to approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) at an average speed of 22 mph (35 km/h). This model has a combined EU cycle of 6.4 / 7.0 liters per 100 kilometers (best / worst), which equals 36.8 / 33.6 mpg).
The chassis of the F10 Active Hybrid 5 is the same as the other 5-Series, with a double-wishbone, servotronic speed-sensitive power steering, high-performance brake system and 18 inch alloy wheels.
The car maker claims that the 2012 Active Hybrid 5 will arrive in BMW’s US showrooms in March 2012. unfortunately, price hasn’t been announced yet.
