Mazda CEO downplays the possibility of a new rotary engine, says it’s not viable – report

Mazda has recently revealed that a return to rotary engines is virtually impossible.

Speaking to Automotive News, Mazda CEO Masa-michi Kogai said that the company does not have any plans for a new rotary engine as it was simply not viable to build one. He further explained that if the company were to produce a new rotary engine it would have to be in a product that can generate at least sales of 100,000 units a year.

We have to say that it is certainly disappointing news, especially since Mazda has said that they are zealously working on new models to house the next-generation rotary engine. The executive further said that the company has not given up on rotary engines yet because they can run on a variety of fuels such as petrol, hydrogen and kerosene.

Just to recap, Mazda built their last Renesis engine in June 2012. Well the ambitions of the company are quite high and making such engines that will help the target of 100,000 units a year, the company will have to work really hard towards the same.
