Hyundai, South Korea’s biggest automaker, sold more cars in Germany in August than the combined sales of 5 German automakers in South Korea, data revealed Sunday.

During last month, Hyundai sold 9,240 cars in the country, boost of 5.6 percent from a year earlier, as per the data assembled by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.

In contrast, the combined sales of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche pertained to 8,735 in South Korea last month, as per German Association of the Automotive Industry.

Hyundai also surpassed its German competitors in sales in July. The South Korean automaker sold 9,209 systems in Germany, while the five German carmakers offered 9,059 units in South Korea.

Hyundai’s performance came as South Korea withdrew the sales licenses of 80 car models sold by Audi Volkswagen Korea, the regional importer of the German vehicles, due to emissions scandal.

During August, Audi sold 476 cars in South Korea, decrease of 83 percent from 2,796 in August last year. Volkswagen suffered a 97.6 percent on-year plunge with just 76 cars sold in South Korea last month.

The drop in sales of Audi and Volkswagen automobiles decreased the combined market share of German cars to 54.8 percent in August from 74.6 percent a year previously.
