BMW may develop electric Mini in Germany in place of Britain

Luxury automaker BMW is thinking about moving organized production of an electric version of its Mini compact automobile to Germany from Britain in reaction to plans by London to leave the EU single market, the Handelsblatt reported.

BMW may move production to its sites in Regensburg and Leipzig, the paper stated, pointing out company sources. Production at Netherlands-based contract maker Nedcar might likewise be an option, it stated.

BMW prepares to begin talks with the British federal government next week, Handelsblatt stated, adding a choice would need to be made during the 2nd half of the year.

BMW prepares to bring the electric Mini to market in 2019.

The automaker was not available for immediate comment.
