A new Alabama law in effect Wednesday ensures that when you drive an electric or hybrid car, you pay the gas tax as well.

Starting January 1, the state is requiring anybody who owns an electric car or a plug-in hybrid car to pay for a new fee.

The state is hoping to comprise for lost gas tax revenue from people driving electric vehicles. Now electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle owners will have to pay a $200 and $100 yearly fee.

State Rep. Bill Poole sponsored the legislation, he stated it’s supposed to make it more fair to all motorists.

Although only two percent of new car sales came from electric vehicles in 2018, that number is expected to increase significantly in the next decade.

Not only Alabama, but there are seven other states that have similar laws going into effect on Wednesday.
