Ford CEO Jim Hackett stated the automaker is reviewing its product portfolio as customers show a choice for sport utility vehicles that have fuel performances closer to sedans.

Hackett, at a Ford event in Detroit, stated that in the past SUVs were not fuel efficient, but “we’re starting to crack that code”.

The automaker is performing a yearly evaluation of its product portfolio against that backdrop, he said.

Ford has actually signaled a plan to stop producing mid-size Fusion sedans for North America at a plant in Mexico, individuals familiar with Ford’s communications with providers told Reuters on Wednesday.

Ford had previously revealed strategies to move production of its Focus cars to China from Mexico.

Separately, Ford stated it would shift its autonomous and electric vehicle units to Detroit from Dearborn, Michigan.

“The move brings together Ford groups that are creating new company models in a resurgent, varied neighborhood with commercial roots”, Ford stated.

The company said the new center situated in the Corktown neighborhood would be operating early next year.

The team in Corktown will be led by Sherif Marakby, Ford’s vice president of autonomous cars and electrification. The company will start evaluating its newest self-driving automobile innovation next year.
