Make Your Old Car Feel Brand New

Your car may be getting long in the tooth, but that’s no reason to seek a replacement just yet. A few easy fixtures and cleans can get your vehicle performing and feeling like brand new again. You’ll save money and perhaps even increase the value of your car.

Get an oil change

Your oil is what keeps all the moving parts lubricated, preventing them from wearing down. Topping up the oil is important, but sometimes a full oil change can be in order, so that you can clear out all the stuff that’s congealed – the stuff that may in fact cause blockages and blow-bys later down the line. An oil change is something you can do yourself, although it can be time-consuming. If you’d rather seek a mechanic, you can use online comparison sites to find the cheapest oil service prices.

Clean your headlamps

Plastic composite headlamps can weather and dull over time. You can clean them using an old toothpaste and toothbrush method, or get them replaced relatively cheaply. You’ll immediately notice the change in illumination when driving at night and it will give the front of your car a fresher look.

Clean out A/C

Faulty air-con can make your car’s air stale as well as being bad for your health. Mold, mildew and bacteria will build up over time, along with leaves, dust and grime. Get your air conditioning filters all cleaned and replaced and you’ll be amazed by the difference in the quality of air (you can top this off with a deodorizer to give your vehicle that new car smell).

Replace rubber

Tyres aren’t the only rubber you need to worry about on your car – there are all kinds of rubber seals that may be worth replacing. One such seal is the rubber trim on your car doors. This will age and tear over time leading to air gaps that allow hot air to escape during winter and cool air to escape during summer, as well inviting in rain and causing your car to howl when driving fast. Replacing these rubber strips is meticulous work – feel free to give it a go if you have the patience, although it may be best leaving the frustrating job to a mechanic.

Also remember the rubber on your windscreen wipers may need replacing – especially if they’re squeaking regularly or not cleaning your windshield efficiently.

New suspension

There are all kinds of suspension components such as shocks, springs, struts and brake rotors that when replaced can dramatically improve the performance of your car. After putting in new shock absorbers you’ll immediately notice the change in handling (you can even go all out and fit springs and new ball joints if you’ve got the funds).

Worn brake discs may also be having an effect on your driving – they may not necessarily fail a service, but they’ll be causing your driving to be more laboured. Feel the smooth satisfaction of driving a new car by revitalising your suspension.
