New Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe available with 457 and 487 HP engine options

A high performance version of the C-Class Coupe model that Mercedes-Benz has recently launched has been revealed by the company. This was as per speculation and has been built by the AMG division of the company. This car would be a competitor to the RS5 Audi that has 450 hp under its hood and the BMW M3 coupe that boasts of 420 hp of peak power. The BMW M3 has been built around the revised 2012 C63 AMG saloon. The engine fitted on this car is the same 6.2 liter naturally aspirated unit as that fitted on the other models from Mercedes-Benz.

The engine in case of the 2012 C63 AMG Coupe model would have two states of tuning. One would be delivering 457 hp with 600 Nm of peak torque as per EU specs. This would be in the base version. The tuned one would deliver 415 hp and 422 lb-ft of torque as per US standards. The acceleration figures of the tuned car would be 4.5 seconds for the 0 to 100 kmph sprint or 4.4 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph dash. Top speed would be limited electronically to 250 kmph or 155 mph.

There is a further option where the output would be boosted to 487 hp in the EU model and 481 HP for the US one. This would be possible for those who opt for the AMG development package. Acceleration now would be 4.4 seconds for the 0 to 100 kmph and 4.3 seconds for 0 to 60 mph while top speed would be limited to 174 mph or 280 kmph.

For transmission there is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7 speed automatic system which however is the only gearbox option available for the rear-wheel drive coupe. This one offers modes like Controlled Efficiency “C”, “S”, “S+” and “M” modes. A rotary control the technology of which has been borrowed from the SLS AMG Gullwing model would control the gear selection. As per the company gear shifting between “S+” and “M” can be accomplished in just about 100 milliseconds. To test the cars full acceleration capability there is a “RACE START” function incorporated in the car.

The AMG has a modified chassis for the top of the line model. It also gets a separate three link front suspension, a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension and a wider track at both ends, plus more negative camber all round and anti roll bars with a larger cross section. The braking system is made up of composite front discs and there is also the three stage ESP (On, Sport and Off).

The body kit for the new Mercedes car is also new in its own way. There is the front splitter, rear diffuser and a carbon fiber boot lid spoiler along with a modified aluminum bonnet and AMG-specific LED daytime running lights which add to the uniqueness of the car. Wheels are of 18 inch alloy which are wrapped in 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear) tires.

For interior makeup the new Mercedes model has bespoke set of body hugging sports seats with integral head restraints, unique trim and an AMG performance steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections. This last one has been adopted from the CLS 63 AMG.

July 2011 is the expected date when the new Mercedes would be available in the European market with price in Germany expected to be €72,590. Those in the US will however have to wait till September 2011 which is when the car is likely to hit the streets there.
