A 22-year-old man is dead and five others were injured after a three-car crash on Tuesday night in Tamarac, Florida.

The driver identified as Nicholas Maxwell Atkinson, of Tamarac, was driving west on West Commercial Boulevard at a high rate of speed after 9 p.m. when he lost control of his 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO).

The car spun through the inside lane and struck a raised median, splitting in two after it struck into a tree, according to the sheriff’s office.

The front part of the Ford was eventually struck by a Buick that was traveling east as well.

Atkinson was declared dead at the scene.

The Buick driver and his four passengers were all admitted to Holy Cross Hospital where they were treated for small injuries and later released, BSO said.

BSO said traffic homicide detectives are probing the incident.
