You’ve just passed your driving test, what are you going to do now? Most people will immediately start checking the internet or heading down the road to see what cars are on sale. That’s right, it’s time to buy your first vehicle. Or, your first vehicle with an engine at least. But buying a car is a difficult decision. It’s more than likely that you’re not going to be able to buy a car new unless your parents are paying for it. If they are you should consider yourself lucky because buying new is a lot easier. All you need to do is head down to a dealer and pick the one that suits you. Haggle on the price a little and soon you’ll be driving a brand new set of wheels.

If you’re buying a pre-owned car, the situation is a little different. The first thing you need to think about is where to buy from. Ideally, you should buy a pre-owned vehicle from a place that you can trust. This might be your local dealer, or it could be a site online that you know is reputable. One scenario we might suggest you avoid is buying a car that is on display at the side of the road. This is a recipe for disaster particularly if the price is “too good to be missed.” A car selling at only a couple hundred will have all kinds of issues you don’t want to deal with.

However, no matter where you decide to buy your vehicle from there are a few rules you should remember. First, you should never buy a car before you have taken it for a spin. This might seem like basic advice. But too many drivers pick a car and fall in love with the look and the price. Second you should get a full history of the vehicle. In this instance, it’s always best to do your own checks rather than trust the promises of the former driver. Remember, once they sell it on it will be entirely your problem. Lastly and perhaps most importantly don’t always trust appearances. If a car has a new throttle or pedals, this suggests it has seen a lot of wear and tear over the years.

Now we’ve established what you need to think about buying let’s look at what you should be looking for in your first car. You may want to consider looking at the safest vehicle that you can find. A safe vehicle is a smart decision because it’s a sad fact that an overwhelming number of first-time drivers crash in their first year. If you’re one of them, you want to make sure the car you choose protects you.

As well as this you should be weary about how much power you look for. We know you probably want to buy a hot hatchback. But just remember the more power you have, the more difficult it will be to control. As well as this a powerful car will push your insurance premium through the roof. But that’s perhaps something your parents need to worry about.

Another key feature that you probably want to consider is efficiency. Ideally, you want a car that doesn’t devour petrol like there is no tomorrow. The reason this is the case should be obvious. If you’re a first-time driver, you might not have unlimited funds to pay for fuel.

And lastly, you do want the car to look good. If you can, we imagine you want a vehicle that is both fun and stylish. So sit back as we take the cars that match these descriptions for a spin.

Volkswagen Gol

The Volkswagen Gol is a great little car for first-time drivers. It’s got enough power to make it a fun ride but not too much that it will be difficult to handle on the road. As well as this the Gol has always been related to style and substance. It’s routinely picked as one of the best choices for first-time cars that money can buy. Lastly, and perhaps most important of all it looks cool. If you ride around in a Volkswagen Gol, and you’ll certainly get the type of glances you want.

Ford Fiesta

Or you may want to choose the Ford Fiesta. The Ford Fiesta is a great pick for your first car because it’s reliable. This wasn’t on our list, but it should have been. Reliability is important in the first car that you buy because you want to make sure you are not always at the side of the road. Ford have a history of guaranteeing that this never happens. It’s not quite as stylish as the Gol, but it has just as much power. The latest models are also incredibly fuel efficient.

Citroen C1

On the other side of the road, you could buy a Citroen C1. These are a safe vehicle to ride around in but will still give you a lot of fun going around the corners. They are quite stylish but a little more bulky than the previous two choice. The Citroen is a fun and affordable compact car that you won’t be embarrassed to drive around in. However it does have a disadvantage and that’s that the insurance is a little more expensive than the other two. But if you shop around you might be able to find a deal you’re willing to take on.

Hyundai I20

Finally, even though it’s your first car you may still need some space. If you find yourself in this position, look no further than the Hyundai. This car is quite large for a first vehicle, but it has all the features you want. It’s fuel efficient, safe and practical. It might take a little time to get used to how it handles but when you do you’ll love taking it out on the roads. For it’s size it’s also one of the cheapest cars on the market.

We hope you have fun choosing your first car and taking it for a spin out on the roads.
