Three killed after car crash on NC-61 near Browns Summit

Three people were killed after a fiery car crash on NC-61, near Browns Summit on Saturday evening.

The crash happened near Turner-Smith Road in Guilford County just before 5:00 p.m., when the driver of a Dodge Charger crossed the center lane and hit a car before losing control.

A Greensboro firefighter identified as Richard ‘Rick’ Murrell was hit by the Dodge Charger and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Murrell’s wife, Tonya Murrell, was riding in the passenger seat and was hospitalized with serious life-threatening injuries.

The 16-year-old driver of the Dodge was also being treated for life-threatening injuries and is charged with three misdemeanors including death by motor vehicle.

The other two occupants of the Dodge identified as Anna Lattero, 26, and a 15-year-old were trapped inside the car when engulfed.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
