Toyota Motor on Wednesday said it will slash production of completed vehicles by 40 percent in Japan in May as demand continues to decline across the world because of the coronavirus crisis.

The measures, which will slash production to 79,000 vehicles for the month, include suspending production on some days and decreasing shifts form two to one at some plants, the automaker stated.

About 8,582 people in Japan have been confirmed as being infected with the coronavirus. The virus has killed 136 people in the country.
