A man and a woman were killed after they crashed their car head-on with a dump truck on Highway 151 north of Walford, Linn County, Iowa when they were fleeing from deputies.

On Wednesday, a deputy responded to a report of two individuals trying to jump out of a car in the Fairfax area. The deputy located the vehicle with both still inside the car. The man was driving and the woman was on the passenger side, according to Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy tried to stop the car, but the driver did not stop and led the deputy on a high-speed chase Southbound on Highway 151. A minute after the deputy called off the pursuit as the driver was being driven recklessly, the suspect car drove into oncoming traffic and crashed with a northbound dump truck.

Both the man and woman in the car were pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the dump truck was unharmed.

A section of Highway 151 was closed due to the crash but was later reopened.
