The Beijing Auto Show closed its gates last weekend and has recorded the biggest attendance for a motor show with attendees numbering up to 800,000. The event showcased 990 cars and almost all brands from all over the globe were represented.

The 10-day auto show witnessed the unveiling of 89 new cars. With a theme of going green for the future, there were 95 vehicles using energy saving technology that took the spotlight.

Last Saturday alone, there were 145,900 visitors to the fair which coincided with the May Day holiday in China. Some exhibitors had to limit the number of visitors to view their products because of the huge crowd.

The Beijing motor show also sold about forty luxury cars that summed up to about $22 million in sales. On the very first day of the event, a Bugatti Veyron rolled off the showroom. The 16.4 Grand Sport supercar was tagged at 38 million Chinese Yuan.

The Maserati hall was able to get rid of five cars on display. They also have 10 units to be delivered within 2 months after they meet the customization requirements of thebuyer. Each of these cars sells for 2.5 million Chinese Yuan. Their total sales reached the line of about 37 million.

The Rolls-Royce representative reported that they have an order for a Ghost and several other big orders. Porsche displayed 3 cars and was able to sell 8 units in just three days including a unit for about two million Yuan.

The brand managers of the luxury marques were impressed with the purchasing power of the Chinese customers. A Bugatti China executive commented that the buyers of their brand are a lot younger compared with their other markets around the globe. Majority of their buyers are below their 40s who are about 5 to 10 years younger than their western counterparts.

China took the position from the United States last year as the biggest auto market. The surge of sales still continues this year with about 4 million units sold just for the 1st quarter.
