2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 gets its full potential unleashed with the special TracKey

by Alex

Here’s a treat for all those of you planning to buy 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, as Ford will be providing two sets of keys for the car. Getting the Mustang to turn into a race car will be as simple as using the right key. The second key is a special key called as the TracKey. It helps unleash the full performance of the Mustang 302. One has the black boss logo and the other will be a red key. The red key is the TracKey. If you ask your dealer for a TracKey, he will program one for your car. And when you open your car with this key, your Mustang 302 will start with superior performance. The key does not just ensure superior performance but transforms your car into a full fledged race car at the turn of a key. The TracKey activates an additional power train control module called the PCM, turning the mustang 302 into a race car.

The power train control module (PCM) is a software which is activated with the TracKey. It controls more than 200 engine parameters, like braking, fuel control, spark maps, variable car timing etc, thus enhancing its performance.

Jeff Seaman, Mustang’s power train engineer tells that they have done everything that they could to the engine to provide a race car driving experience. With the TracKey it would be unsuitable for use on city roads because of its race car like features. But when you drive on a closed circuit, you will be able to appreciate its performance.

The Trackey will enable the use of a two-stage launch control system similar to the one in Cobra Jet race car. Using the controls, you set a desired launch rpm, accelerate and release the clutch and the launch system provides the car with the temporary boost needed for a jump start in a race.

To use it on roads, the owner can start it with the normal key other than the TracKey and it will be a regular 444 horse power Mustang ready to be used on the streets again. Only a few Ford racing car dealers will be authorized to install the software. The software and key program will be available only with these authorized dealers

The Blue Oval Company also decided to treat every Mustang by offering every Boss 302 owner a complimentary track day, as part of the Boss Track Attack program, held at the Miller Motorsport Park in Tooele, UT. At the track, the drivers will be demonstrated how the TracKey works and also help them with the experience of driving a race car and by honing and developing their skills.

The Ford Mustang 302 Boss is a fifth generation Mustang. Its aero package is almost entirely copied from Boss 302R race car introduced a few months ago. The TracKey is expected to increase its power by 4hp, leading to a total of 444hp from its 5.0 Liter V8. But will this Ford attract customers? Let’s wait and watch.
