Last of its kind: 1964 Works Rally Car MGB Roadster on auction

by Ron Grant

A 1964 MGB Roadster that served as a Works Rally Car is under action after retiring from the motor sport scene 35 years ago. The auction is being handled by the Historics at Brooklands. The car is extremely rare and experts say it is the last one in genuine vehicle in existence.

The rally car is one of the only two MGB produced in 1964. The MGB for auction competed first during the Spa-Sofia-Liege rally back in August 1964. It also competed as a works vehicle during the Castrol Danube Rally, RAC Rally, Geneva Rally, Acropolis Rally, and the Tulip Rally which were all held in 1965.

The low ride rally car was very successful on track but it was a bit difficult to expect a lot when the rally trials involved tough road and weather conditions. After its retirement, as a private vehicle, the MGB roadster on auction had cruised the roads of Europe extensively. An engine failure during its trip to Scotland forced the car to be stored in an enclosed garage for more than three decades.

The restoration of the car really gave attention to the small details of the car. The body of the car is still the original monocoque from MGB with door skins, boot lid, hard top, bonnet, and aluminum skins.

The cockpit boasts of auxiliary switches from the 1960s and restored seats. Other period features where also restored like the foam to protect the knees, map pocket, quilted finishing of the transmission tunnel, inner sills, among others.

The engine of the car is a B Series BMC 4 cylinder paired with a 3 Synchro transmission. It still has the Leyland special camshaft, AHT-100H cylinder heads, SU carburetors receiving fuel through Filter King to guarantee accurate fuel flow. Some components of the suspension system of the car have been re-manufactured.

The MGB sports wire rims by Motor Wheel Services hugged by Dunlop racing tires. The car also has items like a map reading lamp and horn switch that can be used by the navigator.

The MGB rally car is truly a great addition for any collection. At least for those who can afford this automotive gem.
