Two dead after car goes airborne and hits tree in Polk County

Two men were killed after their car crashed on Thursday afternoon in Winter Haven, Polk County.

A 58-year-old identified as Edwin Gonzalez was driving southbound in his white 1993 two-door Nissan on Buckeye Loop Road and a 35-year-old identified as Pedro Gonzales Nunez II was his passenger.

The crash took place when the car started to fishtail, Gonzalez lost control of the car and hit a driveway embankment which caused the car to launch into the air and travel 60 feet before striking a tree.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both were using seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Buckeye Loop Road was closed in both directions following the crash.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the incident.
