Mini Cooper S challenges Porsche 911 Carrera S to a track race

An innovative and new marketing scheme has been adopted by MINI USA, makers of the Mini Cooper S. The idea originated from none other than the President of MINI USA, Jim McDowell who has thrown a challenge to Porsche, its competitor, to a duel on the tracks.

This new idea has been floated by McDowell on Facebook and therefore he has effectively used the best of medium for launching this new concept of marketing his product. He has directly addressed his challenge at Detlev von Platen who is the CEO of Porsche’s US division to put up their 911 S model against the MINI Cooper S from MINI USA. To be driven by factory drivers he has announced the race to be held at Road Atlanta in a couple of weeks. Talking of the challenge that he has thrown open to its limit he has stated that he would wear a shirt with the logo “We Beat Porsche” or “We Did Not Beat Porsche” depending on the outcome of the race.

Meanwhile, the MINI Cooper S is 2436.1 lbs by weight which translates to 1105 Kg. It has a turbocharged 1.6 liter power house that drives its front wheels and provides it with 175 hp at 5,500 rpm along with 240 Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. Compared to this the Porsche 911 Carrera S is a 3306.9 lbs car or 1,500 kg by weight. It has a rear wheel drive and is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.8 liter boxer power plant that’s installed at the rear with ratings of 385 hp at 6500 rpm and 309 lb ft torque at 4,400 rpm.

McDowell incidentally has rendered his service at Porsche for eight years.
