A New Carbon Ceramic Brake Package for 2012 M5: Info and Specs

by Zack Colt

Porsche has been the first one to update their cars with carbon ceramic brakes, even though they have been around for quite a while, but due to their high commanding prices, this kind of braking system has been left to the very top-end applications such as supercars or hypercars. Rumours are going around that BMW is working on some carbon ceramic brakes for the new F10 M5. This might just be a first, since BMW might be the first company that offers this upgrade on a cheaper automobile (in relation to what cars are already offered with the special brakes).

The 2012 BMW M5 is powered by a 4.4L V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo (consisting of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology) making 560-hp between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 502 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm. Mated to a 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic (with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters), the 2012 BMW M5 goes from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in 13 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph or 190 mph with M Driver’s Package.

The benefits that these braking systems have are that they weigh less and have a much higher resistance to fade and heat thanks to the ceramic composure. But some have found that they reduce braking feel. The project is conducted by the collaboration between SGL Carbon and BMW’s brake supplier, Brembo, and unfortunately, release dates for the brake package on the M5 will be available supposedly sometime by the end of 2012 so until then, we have to be satisfied with what we allready know.
