Volkswagen Polo facelift plug-in hybrid and CNG versions coming next year – report

Volkswagen is supposedly planning to diversify the Polo lineup by adding plug-in hybrid and CNG versions to the lineup.

Recently facelifted, the German supermini will receive a plug-in hybrid system but it will not be the same as compared to what the Golf GTE has, mainly because the Polo still rides on the old PQ25 platform whereas the Golf VII is built on the MQB architecture. Ekkehard Pott from Volkswagen’s powertrain development team stated that the technology will differ and they have to make vehicle-specific adaptation since the cars don’t share the same platform.

Volkswagen is also taking into consideration a compressed natural gas (CNG) version which would be derived from the Golf TGI BlueMotion that was showcased at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. That car came fitted with a 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter TSI engine compatible with both gasoline and CNG.

Nothing has been confirmed officially yet but we expect both versions to be out sometime in 2015. So we will have to wait for some more time for further details to be revealed about these upcoming models.
