Honda will expand Clarity to three-car lineup, including EV and plug-in versions

by David Bond

Throughout the introduction of its 2017 Accord Hybrid, Honda took some time to talk about increase its electrification efforts in the near future. The most significant takeaway from that discussion is the confirmation that Honda will expand the Clarity Fuel Cell right into a three-car lineup, each including various levels of electrification.

Honda’s Clarity Fuel Cell will are set to go on sale in California later on in 2016. Following that, two other Clarity designs will go on sale– a battery-electric variation, in addition to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Those two are approximated to go on sale in 2017, however there are no specifics beyond that.

Similar to the Clarity Fuel Cell, the Clarity EV will go on sale first in California. The Clearness Plug-In, however, will debut all throughout the United States at the same time. Honda states it’s still working out the information with the EV.

Information are little at the moment, but Honda assures that its Clarity Plug-In will accomplish more than 40 miles of electric-only variety, blowing most present PHEVs from the water. There is currently no conversation of prices or certain timelines.

While Honda has actually guaranteed to amaze all its core designs over the next decade and beyond, there’s no certainty that the Accord Plug-In will return. The Clarity and Accord are similarly sized, and it’s seldom a wise company decision to introduce designs that contend mostly with each other (see Oldsmobile and Pontiac how that ended up).

Honda’s choice to expand Clarity is not a move different to Hyundai’s, which unveiled the Ioniq this past year. The Ioniq is the first automobile to have actually three distinct amazed platforms– gas-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric. The Clarity lineup will be similar, however with a far larger automobile, it’s bigger than the Accord, whereas Ioniq is a compact, and the addition of a hydrogen fuel cell version.
