Nearly two weeks after Apple Inc. secured approval to test its autonomous-car technology in California, the first pictures of the vehicle have been caught on Silicon Valley roads.

The white Lexus RX450h SUV emerged from an Apple center recently and was kitted out with a range of sensing units, according to an individual who saw the vehicle and supplied images to Bloomberg News. The sensors included Velodyne Lidar Inc.’s top-of-the-range 64-channel lidar, a minimum of 2 radar and a series of cameras. The sensors seem to be products bought off the rack from providers, instead of custom-made, as per an industry professional who saw the pictures. An Apple representative refused to comment.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles gave Apple clearance to perform trials with 3 automobiles earlier this month. The company’s “Project Titan”, as the autonomous vehicle project is known internally, has sustained a hard 12 months since veteran Apple executive Bob Mansfield took control of its management in April last year. He has controlled the project’s ambitions to concentrate on establishing autonomous-driving software prior to the iPhone-maker thinks of building its own vehicle, individuals knowledgeable about the strategy stated at the time. Prior to the strategy shift, Apple held discussion about licensing its innovation to carmakers consisting of Volkswagen and BMW.

California has so far granted autonomous vehicle testing permits to 30 firms, a combination of tech players, start-ups, carmakers and automobile suppliers. Lawmakers are rewriting legislation to enable the testing of autonomous vehicles without the presence of a driver, though the capability to intercede from remotely would be needed.

In addition to Apple, both Alphabet’s Waymo and start-up Zoox Inc. are utilizing Lexus RX450 models, developed by Toyota Motor, to check their self-driving vehicle technology, as per the California DMV.
