One person died and at least one other missing after a car drove off Highway 1 into the ocean near Malibu, California, on early Monday.

The crash was reported around 1:40 a.m. near Deer Creek Beach in Ventura County, the California Highway Patrol said. A witness said the car “flew into the ocean.”

A short boulder-covered slope separates the Pacific Coast Highway from the narrow beach at that point.

CHP officers and a county fire crew discovered a car flipped onto its roof in the surf. The driver, pinned inside, was declared dead at the scene.

At least one other person was believed to have been in the vehicle but nobody else was discovered at the scene, the CHP said.
