The Dutch markets watchdog has fined Volkswagen 450,000 euros ($534,000) for misinforming customers who bought its diesel vehicles from 2009 to 2015.

The Authority for Consumer & Markets (ACM) stated it had imposed the maximum fine it could on the German automaker for its use of “defeat devices“, illegal software that made its cars discharge less pollution throughout testing than they did on the road.

The ACM stated on Tuesday that Volkswagen had misleadingly marketed the diesel cars and trucks as “environmentally friendly” from 2009-2015.
