Dennis Byrd, a former New York Jets player passed away on Saturday in a car accident outside Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Byrd, 50, played 4 years in the NFL prior to a paralyzing on-field injury ended his professional career back in 1992. However the imposing 6-foot-5-inch, 270-pound defensive lineman ended up being remembered best for discovering how to walk once again in less than a year after the accident, going on to act as an inspiration to Jets fans.

“We are all devastated by the untimely loss of Dennis Byrd,” New York Jets Owner Woody Johnson stated in a declaration late Saturday. “Soft-spoken and strong-willed, the inspiration he supplied to all not only by his play on the field but from the way he conquered life’s challenges was impressive by any measure.”
