GM to develop crash-proof Cadillac

by Alex

There are times when it becomes very difficult to avoid or prevent accidents despite all attempts on part of the driver. For this reason, there is so much special importance or significance assigned to airbags, anti-whiplash seats, and roof crush in modern cars. Perhaps the accidents will not happen in an ideal world.

However, if we go by the beliefs of the guys at GM, it may not be a virtue of an ideal world alone and is not as far from reality as it may sound. It is going to come with a handful of surprises for you. According to John Capp, the Cadillac Global Active Safety director, GM is working on what is called as the in-vehicle Doppler radar. This radar would be a boon in the automobile industry when clubbed with artificial intelligence in the new cars. The Doppler radar would be successful in spotting potential obstacles in driving freely on the road which also includes traffic jams ahead. It would also share this information with other vehicles as well as traffic signals in real time. The autonomous vehicles would then use this information, and if required in such situations, would potentially start driving itself.

Some time back we had also come across a promising project which Ford along with a few other automobile players were engaged in that involved the development of a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) systems. The project aims at building a system whereby there would be a real time communication among the vehicles on the road. This would be in the form of potential road hazards on a given route, which will get passed on to the other vehicles. This communication system would also share the other important details including traffic and congestion situations. The vehicles, in order to determine the best route to the destination would use this information.

While automobile manufacturers are working on systems that would combine the centralized and local V2V data and use artificial intelligence to provide a safe ride, the EU is building the centralized system that would collect and broadcast helpful details to vehicles running on the road through its ‘Intelligent Car Initiative’.

In particular, accident avoidance technologies currently available have been implemented, according to GM, in the 2010 Cadillac DTS Platinum.
These accident avoidance technologies include and comprise of blind spot alert, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. As GM points out, this makes the new 2010 Cadillac DTS Platinum a step forward in making crash-proof cars of the future.
