A person is being alleged of ramming an automobile with five individuals inside, turning it upside down into the Avon River.

John David Malcolm Mclaren Savage, who is a 27-year-old traffic management operator from Somerfield, is accused of assaulting five individuals using a vehicle as a weapon, and assaulting among them having a bottle as a weapon.

The five supposed victims were passengers of a vehicle that was allegedly rammed in the incident on March 25 along New Brighton Rd and crashed upside down into the Avon River.

The attack with the bottle is alleged to have happened after the crash.

Authorities released no info about the event at the time, but a photo was published on social media.

Savage went into no pleas when he appeared prior to Judge David Ruth in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday.

Duty legal representative Trudi Aickin applied for his release on bail, however Judge Ruth ruled that Savage must be remanded in custody for an appearance by video-link from the jail on August 1.
