Mazda launching 20th Anniversary MX-5 Miata in Geneva

by Alex

It’s been a full two decades since the MX-5 (then Miata) was first introduced to the shores of the United States and skeptical buyers. Since then it has not only claimed the crown as a distinguished player in the convertible market, it also owns the crown for the top selling sports car hands down.

It would be a shame not to celebrate its 20th anniversary wouldn’t it? Well Mazda thinks the same way and we’re hearing that a special commemorative edition will be coming to the Geneva Motor Show later this year. The vehicle will be called the “20th Anniversary Limited Edition MX-5 Miata. As the phrase “Limited Edition” applies, only a certain number of these cars will be built, and that number is capped at 2,000; furthermore they will only be available in Europe. There is no official word why only the Europeans will have these vehicles but it might be because they will be building these vehicles off the 1.8 liter car which is not sold in the U.S.

Other then the fact that you will get a certificate identifying your 20th Anniversary Mazda MX-5 as a limited edition, there’s nothing more that really sets this apart from the other 1,000,000 Miata’s sold to date. But then again, it might be awesome to have a vehicle that is so downright awesome that only 1,999 other people can take pride in this satisfaction (other than you that is).
