Do You Need Auto Insurance For Teenagers?

by Ron Grant

Auto insurance is problematic enough without the added concern, and expense, of getting your teen auto insurance to drive their vehicles on the road. As each child nears the age of sixteen, paramount on their mind is getting their license to start driving. Once the teen gets their license, or preferably before, begins the process of getting auto insurance quotes.

An auto insurance policy for your teen or even adding them to your existing policy is an expense that could add up to cost a pretty penny. Finding low cost auto insurance is something that will take a fair amount of research and policy comparisons to find you some teenage low cost rates. Getting good teen auto insurance serves as a protection for you and your teen as they enter the world of split second decisions in a fast paced environment they’ve never experienced before.

Getting low cost auto insurance for teens has always been a problem with high rates because teens, unfortunately, are some of the most reckless and unsafe drivers on the road. According to the Allstate Foundation, which has done a tremendous amount of study and research about teen drivers, this is some of the information they have found about teen drivers on their driving attitudes and behaviors:

 89% of teens said their parents are influential in encouraging safer driving.

 44% of teens said they drive more safely without friends in the car.

 67% of teens have felt unsafe when someone else was driving, but only 45% said they would speak up if someone was driving in a way that made them scared or uncomfortable.

 56% said they make and answer phone calls, and 13% send and respond to text messages while driving, yet 32% classified this behavior as “extremely” or “very” distracting.

As you can see, getting affordable teen auto insurance can be difficult when faced with the real costs associated with teen drivers. Insurance companies analyze virtually every aspect of driver behavior at every age and teen drivers are one of the most risky categories they cover. Not just because of their inexperience behind the wheel, but social and peer associated behavior that affects most teens while they’re driving.

Shopping Around For Cheap Teen Car Insurance

Having your child drive without an auto insurance policy is like having them walk across a highway in a blindfold. They may make it, but it certainly was not a smart choice. The cost of teenagers auto insurance my seem insurmountable because of the price, but consider what would happen if that same teenager got in an accident and what that would ultimately cost. There is good teen auto insurance available for a discount – cheap and affordable so both you and your teen can have peace of mind when they’re on the road.

Many parents are surprised at the substantial additional price involved in adding a teen on their existing car insurance policy and look hard to find affordable teen auto insurance. Teen auto insurance can be very pricey since the insurance agency is dealing with beginning drivers who make up a substantial portion of all accident claims. Most young drivers are just learning the skills they need to become safe drivers and an auto insurance policy for them generally cost substantially more. Obtaining affordable teen insurance isn’t easy, but if you shop around for the best deals, you can find low cost auto insurance.

Car insurance is another area in life where good grades matter. Many insurance companies offer discounts on teen car insurance policies to teenagers with good grades. The logic behind insurance companies offering an insurance discount for good students is they feel if a teen is more diligent with their studies, the better driver they will make on the road. Also, if you’re buying a car for your teen to drive, buy an older model that doesn’t cost as much to insure. If you have a few choices in mind, get some cheap auto insurance quotes for the different cars you’re thinking about to see what the different rates will be.

Teens are creatures that like to push things to the limit. Unfortunately, driving is not one of the best places to test that out. As a parent, make sure you have a conversation with your child and set up some rules and guidelines so they understand that how they drive can impact their teen auto insurance policy. Tickets, accidents, and DUIs can drastically alter what you will be charged for your teenagers auto insurance. They need to understand without a doubt how this all affects the cost of auto insurance, not to mention how unsafe and dangerous it can be.

Remember to make sure your teen understands driving is a privilege, not a right. Send them to a driver education course; most states require it, but if not, it will probably get you an insurance discount and therefore save some more money. Cheap car insurance is good to have but make sure they are reputable and have a good track record by doing some research about the company. It’s good to get some teenage low cost insurance, but if the company doesn’t honor its policy and take care of its customers, it’s probably just a waste of money if it’s not there when you need it.

Do everything you can to get a car insurance discount when shopping for insurance for your teen. Every penny you can save yourself, or your teen, especially in this time of economic hardship will help the budget stretch a little further for your other needs. Teenage low cost insurance is out there and can be found with some searching and comparison of what companies have to offer. Low cost car insurance not only makes sense for your teen, but would also make sense for you and would help with finding your teen the best policy available for both of you.

Take your time and make the insurance companies work for your business in providing you the best auto insurance quotes that are out there. There’s no sense in paying more that you need to for your newly driving teen.
