Porsche Cayenne’s V6 diesel engine gets a thorough once over: leads to all round improvements

by Alex

It was only last year that Porsche had launched the second generation Cayenne SUV. And now the company has come up with an improved version of the Cayenne’s diesel engine. Its not only that as Porsche has stated it is also improving and adding more options to the existing range.

Porsche engineers have first worked on the Cayenne’s diesel engine, which is a V6 unit of 3.6 liter capacity. They have added to it a new turbocharger for improved response and more efficiency. It also features increase in direct injection pressure which now comes at 2000 bar and a crankshaft that is lighter.

With all of these enhancements, the engine (and hence the car) has been lessened by 20 kg in weight so that the total weight of the car now stands at 2080 KG or 4585 lbs. There is also an increase in the engine’s power output by 5 hp, which now stands at 245 hp. Fuel consumption on the other hand has been reduced by 0.2 liter per kilometer and reads 7.2 liter per 100 km or 32.7 mpg. There is something for the eco-conscious to cheer as well since there has also been a reduction in carbon footprint of the new improved Cayenne, with CO2 emissions being merely 189 g/km, a betterment of six grams from its previous variant.

Also, none of the tinkering with the engine has had any effect on the SUV’s sporty characteristics and can do the 0 to 100 km or 62 mile run in 7.6 seconds. Here again, there is an improvement by 0.2 seconds from its previous version and the top speed also has been bettered by 2 kmph with 220 kmph or 137 mph being the top whack that the SUV would now be capable of.

The company is also working on the Cayenne S Hybrid which is an upgrade of the original hybrid variant and would allow the car to be driven in pure electric driven mode at low speeds as also a cold start. There is also the availability of the Porsche Exclusive option which is a carry-over from the Panamera Turbo.

A booster package for the Cayenne Turbo gives added power to the Cayenne Turbo by 40 hp and makes the car to have a peak power output of 540 hp. The peak torque also increases to 750 Nm or 553 lb ft with this Powerkit which has been borrowed from the Panamera. Sprint factor of the car with this Powerkit installed comes down by 0.1 seconds and therefore the 0 – to 100 km sprint is completed in 4.6 seconds. Topspeed is also improved by 4 kmph and stands at 281 kmph or 176 mph.

Fuel consumption rates do not change with these upgrades as per Porsche, and remains at 11.5 liter per 100 km or 20.45 mpg. The other upgrades that the kit includes are the Cayenne Turbo Porsche Exclusive that adds blacked-out bi-xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), tinted LED rear lights, quad sports tailpipe look and new trim options.

There are also the added feature of the Lane Change Assist system from fall 2011 and the new Porsche Exclusive package for the exterior, which includes bi-xenon headlights in black and bespoke tailpipes. These would be applicable for the New Year model cars. Wireless Internet access feature would also be available for Panamera models that come out after June 2011.
