SLS AMG Gullwing from Mercedes Benz is official Safety Car for the 2010 season of F1

by Ionut Dragomir

The 2010 race season for Formula 1 will kick off this March 12 and everyone is excited about it. The opening will also put spotlight on the new F1 safety car which is expected to be the most powerful in the history of the game. The SLS AMG Gullwing from Mercedes Benz will take the reigns from its roadster cousin the SL 63 AMG used during the previous season.

The SLS AMG Gullwing being a supercar did not need any mechanical remix to fit the bill as the F1 safety car. It sports a V8 that puts out 571 horsepower and is paired with a dual clutch gearbox with seven speeds. All they added to the production version of the car is a rear silencer to allow the V8 to breathe and give out good acoustics.

The Gullwing F1 safety car is stamped with F1 logos all over plus the distinct light bar on its roof with a built in television camera. The side mirrors used carbon fiber giving its ears a cooler look. The rear plate displays “Safety Car” using gleaming 700 LEDs.

The interiors of the car features the bucket seat and six point belts. The car has also been fitted with central screens so the crew can monitor the progress of the race. A radio system has also been installed so communication with the race officials and organizers will be easy.

The new F1 safety car also gets a Marshalling system on the instrument cluster to allow the driver and his crew to see the same signals sent to the cockpits of Formula 1 drivers.
Mercedes Benz is also fielding a C 63 AMG Estate to be the official F1 Medical Car.
