Toyota could build a GT 86 Cabrio without Subaru’s help – report

by SpeedLux

Fuji Heavy Industries President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga recently downplayed the possibility of a Toyotaru convertible but still Toyota is considering of making it on its own.

In an interview with Wards Auto, Scion Vice President Doug Murtha said that it was something that they were looking at internally from both a manufacturing standpoint as to where they should build something that’s relatively low-volume, if not at Subaru and from an engineering standpoint which includes answering questions such as where are those resources going to come from to do it?

The key point that should be noted is that Subaru makes all three sports cars and they believe the model would need an extensive redesign to be offered as a convertible. As Yoshinaga previously explained, “We make the car, so if we don’t make it, it can’t happen.”

Despite this, Toyota and Scion are still calculating the sales potential of an 86 and FR-S Convertible to determine if it’s worth making by themselves. Well only time will tell whether we will be able to see the model see the light of production and till then just keep guessing and waiting.
