Two people were killed after a multi-vehicle car crash on Wednesday afternoon on I-40 in Smith County.

The crash took place when a passenger vehicle ran underneath a tractor-trailer as the truck was reducing the speed after a previous crash.

One driver who observed the accident said he believed that the slowdown was due to a jackknifed tanker truck on the EB side that entirely blocked all Eastbound lanes of traffic.

Two people died due to the crash.

Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Officials have urged drivers to use alternate routes as I-40 will remain closed for some time.
